INTENT – Perform in Class January 31

Create a movement sequence that explores virtual forces from within you and from without you.

Your intent is to show the forces from within and the forces from without. How are you moved by each? What kind of movement is associated with each origination? Do they interact with one another? Who is in control? Does that force always remain in control?

You may order these forces in any way you want, but make sure you have a good representation of each and make sure your audience sees the intent in the work.

POST A VIDEO OF YOUR STUDY BELOW. Remember to title, put your name, and 1-5 sentences about your process, concept, idea, etc.

Intent – Carissa

For this piece I kind of went in the opposite direction and wondered how I would move if I had no intention of my own. This was inspired by an empty bag blowing down the sidewalk, and the way it would wobble, spin or bounce wherever the wind took it. There were times in this piece where I really didn’t intend for something to happen – like rolling out of frame or flopping over after the shoulder roll – but that’s where my momentum took me! It was interesting to discover that giving up intention also meant giving up some level of control, and overall it was a really fun exploration.

Intent – McAfee

When working on this study, I wanted to try and purposefully dissociate my own planned intents for movements; however, when I tried doing so, I frequently felt like my movement became more and more calculated the more I tried to let my blank mind move my body without planning. In order to combat this, I tried something a little odd–I decided to cover my eyes and alter my perception by putting a literal bag over my head (safely!). I directly intended certain aspects of the final movement sequence–such as what levels I would use, and planning on incorporating physically touching the Bag Barrier surrounding my head, but I found enjoyment in the way The Bag made me adjust to *its* intents (such as slipping one direction or even off of my head), and therefore safely playing with what “controlled”/led my movements by reacting to The Bag’s intents. As you may notice, The Bag also decided my “I End”!
