ATTENDANCE: The learning we do in this class takes place in the DOING with one another. Please prioritize attendance for this class.  Class attendance is also a symbol of solidarity with the fellow members of your class. Meaningful education requires a shared cultural experience and the activities, creative practice and discussions that take place in this class are precisely that. Expectation is that you will attend all classes. That being said, I am aware that sometimes things come up that prevent full attendance.

Should you find your ability to attend class challenged due to illness, outstanding personal crisis, or educative opportunity beyond my classroom walls, please email or text me at least three hours prior to class to have your absence noted as an excused absence.

In the subject line of the email write: Requesting Excused Absence.

If your circumstances force you to exceed three absences, I expect you to schedule a meeting with me so that we can make alternative learning arrangements.

If you miss class it is your responsibility to get together with another classmate to catch up on missed material or you may schedule a meeting with me.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO STAY ON TOP OF WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED.  THIS INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Any handouts that may have been distributed
  • Video viewing that may have occurred during class time
  • Improvisation or composition assignment
  • Material taught in class

Religious Observances: I encourage students who plan to observe holy days that coincide with class meetings or assignment due dates to let  me know in the first weeks of classes.

ACCESSIBILITY: I strive to create a fully inclusive learning space, thus I welcome individual students to approach me about distinctive learning needs. In particular, I encourage students with disabilities to have a conversation with me and disclose how our classroom or course activities could impact the disability and what accommodations would be essential to you. You will also need to have a conversation about and provide documentation of your disability to the Coordinator for Student Disability Resources, John Hirschman, located on the 3rd floor of Goodnow Hall (x3089).

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: All work at Grinnell College is subject to rules of Academic Integrity and Honesty. If you have questions about citation and other areas of honesty, please ask me. Or consult the Student Handbook. Academic Integrity is a vital area that will be part of your entire life. Learn about and respect this practice. http://catalog.grinnell.edu/content.php?catoid=12&navoid=2537#Honesty_in_Academic_Work

WRITING LAB: The Grinnell College Writing Laboratory offers one-on-one instruction in composition, including organization, coherence, grammar, and style. Students may enroll in courses or sign up for appointments as needed. Students work with an instructor on some part of the writing process, such as brainstorming, organizing, revising, or copyediting. Take advantage of this great resource. Schedule your Writing Lab appointments when you have a first draft or are at the final stages, but make the appointment at least 1 ½ weeks before an assignment is due.
